2007

The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo offered the fifth Castellano en Perú/Ola ka honua summer program with Sra. Luisa Oldmen. Travel dates were from Wednesday, May 16 to Saturday, June 30, 2007.
Castellano is the Spanish spoken in Latin America. “Ola ka honua” is the Hawaiian expression which conveys the idea that the world is alive and everyone and everything in it are interconnected. We are all responsible for keeping the world alive.
Participants were immersed in the language through daily interactions with native speakers. They used castellano as their target language and improved their vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency in the language. Through excursions to cultural sites, museums, universities, native communities, markets, churches, and restaurants, our participants gained a deeper understanding of the Peruvian people and their culture. In classes and study sessions, participants and local students compared experiences and these exchanges and reflections contributed to a keener perception of a global community.
Through service learning projects in local communities with local students, our participants shared their language, culture and their aloha.,
Sites visited included colonial Lima, Islas Ballestas in Paracas, Cumbemayo and Porcón in Cajamarca, Sipán in Chiclayo; Catacaos in Piura, the Colca Canyon in Arequipa; and Lake Titicaca in Puno, There were opportunities to sand-board in Huacachina in Ica, fly over the Nazca Lines, surf in Máncora and Lobitos in Piura, explore Cusco and discover the majesty of Macchu Picchu.
