Castellano en Perú / Ola ka honua 2002
Con Sra. Luisa Oldmen y Ms. Dana Petteys.

Fourteen high school students from the Big Island, Hawaii, joined Ms.Dana Petteys and Sra. Luisa Oldmen,in the second Ola ka honua international venture and the first Castellano en Perú, a study and volunteer abroad pilot program, which took place in Perú from May 29, to June 24. Parents Michael Oldmen, Greg and Vicki McManus also joined our group for the exciting journey.
We visited Lima, Cajamarca, Trujillo, Tambopata, Cuzco, and Macchu Picchu.
In the beautiful city of Cajamarca, our hosts were the students, faculty, and families from Davy College. Our students worked alongside their Peruvian counterparts in Davy College doing community service work at the Hogar de Cristo and the Cuna Jardín Juana Alarco de Damnert. Many thanks to Ian Raitt, headmaster of Davy College, and Henry Vásquez, teacher and CAS coordinator. We also want to thank Michael Hubbard and Minera Yanacocha.
In our brief visit to Trujillo we were kindly hosted by the families of Fleming College. We thank them for their hospitality and extend our thanks to Fleming College headmaster Michael Exley, Gladys Cuba and Alejandro Chang.
Our students then went to Lima where they participated in a Youth Conference in Independencia and worked on diverse projects at Deporte y Vida in Villa El Salvador. Throughout their volunteer efforts our students were always eager to help, to work, to speak Spanish, to celebrate, and to share their language and culture with their hosts. Every one of these students was an excellent ambassador of their country, their state, their city, their schools, and their families.
In cosmopolitan Lima, our gracious hosts included Luz Barreto, Ana María Chávez, Gerri Iadicicco, Monica Mont, and César Meza Mont. We were fascinated to discover and fully enjoyed the Inka Terra hotels, including Eko Hotel in Lima, Reserva Amazónica in Tambopata, and the jewel crown of Macchu Picchu El Pueblo Hotel.
